If you’re in a costume design program, and you spend more of your time working on your animu cospuray than the current show that’s running at your institution, you’re in the wrong fucking place.

Seriously. This really fucking annoys me to no end.

I totally understand and agree that cosplay can be a great way to get into sewing and a lot of doors open to you, like costume for theatre or stage or fashion, but there are SO. MANY. FUCKING. ANIME. KIDS. That go into costume tech theatre just because they think that it’s going to help them make their cosplay better.

Fucking. Stop.

It’s degrading to yourself and to the industry, ‘kay?  I do theatre because I fucking LOVE theatre. I love everything about it, even stage management, which I never want to do ever, but I can definitely appreciate my stage managers because GOD what an awful job that is.  I love plays and running crew. I love spending hours in the costume shop to the point where I forget to eat lunch because I’m so absorbed and my designer and Tech Director is telling me to go home because I’ve been there for too long.  I love taking a script and analyzing the fuck out of it so I can make it as awesome as it can be on stage. I love making the actors look good and the audience love the show without even showing my face to them.  I love working with other techs in other departments to see how their designs and builds/ hangs will affect our designs and builds, and how every aspect harmoniously resonates with each other.

I don’t do costume design and tech because I think that taking a draping class will help me make this really super complicated video game character’s costume that I’ve been DYING to wear to some random weeaboo convention.  Besides, how the fuck do you have time to do shit like that in a program that’s more demanding than mine? I’m at a state college, and I don’t have time do to anything other than school, the shop, homework, and sleep.  I know a university’s program has a much higher course load. And if you really wanted to do this for the rest of your life, I figured you’d be spending as much time in the shop as possible.  But nope.  Too busy making animu cosplay.

If I ever have the honor of being in charge of my own costume shop, I would not want anyone who’s there just because they LURVE ANIMU SO MUCH AND WANT TO USE THEIR SKILLZ TO COSPURAY. I don’t have time for that shit.  I need you to be here, and be focused on getting things done for the show, not live in your fantasy world. If you want to live in your fantasy world, don’t waste your time being in theatre, because you won’t have time to do it in this industry.

I get so annoyed at this because theatre is an art.  It always has been.  Respect it like you would with any other art form.  Get the show that you’re working on done, spend some extra time on that, and then you can use your free time to work on your cosplay.  If you love theatre, then you should want to work on your schoolwork and theatre work before your own personal fetishes.
